EP. 21 | STAR TREK 50th ANNIVERSARY

On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, we’ll be listening to the film, TV and video game music of STAR TREK, which first aired on network TV on September 6, 1966. During this very special program, you are going to hear two hours of new and old music from the various STAR TREK films, TV series and video games.

First up you’re going to hear brand new music by Michael Giacchino from the third film in the rebooted STAR TREK film franchise, STAR TREK BEYOND.

Our weekly video game selection comes from Chad Seiter’s 2013 score to STAR TREK THE GAME.

Our film music vault selection will be music from the two-part STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION episode called THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS featuring music by Ron Jones.

We will have four re-recordings for you starting with music from Fred Steiner’s score to the classic STAR TREK episode MIRROR, MIRROR.  You also hear a new recording Jerry Goldsmith’s “The Enterprise” from STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.  And you’ll hear two recordings from the album called SYMPHONIC STAR TREK featuring music from STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY by Cliff Eidelman and STAR TREK GENERATIONS by Dennis McCarthy.

I’ll be featuring individual selections from Jerry Goldsmith’s STAR TREK INSURRECTION and James Horner’s STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK.

And you’ll hear a suite from Jerry Goldsmith’s last STAR TREK score to STAR TREK NEMESIS.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Loved this episode! And it didn’t bust my budget like listening to you usually does, since, as a long-tine and die-hard Trekkie, I own most of this music already. Although there is that Varese Sarabande expanded edition of the NEMESIS score…. Argh… Woods! WOOOOOODS! (Channeling my best Shatner from ST II…)

(And if that video game score were available commercially, I’d probably cave for it, too! The stuff around the 99-101 minutes mark has a real open-air competitive marching band show sound to it – I can almost picture the color guard twirling the flags – I don’t know if that’s what the composer was going for, but I like it!)

Can you give the details on the re-record of “The Enterprise” by Goldsmith again? That was gorgeous!

Great work, as always – well-chosen tracks, expertly presented. Love it!

Thanks for listening, Mike. And thanks for writing your wonderful note.

The expanded Nemesis album is a revelation. Lots of great stuff not on the original release.

“The Enterprise” recording I played comes from the following album, which is fantastic!

Thanks again for listening! I so happy that you enjoyed the show and the took the time out of your day to write!

Wow, Michael Giacchino did it very well again. Giacchino is really the younger John Williams. He continues the big orchestral style in the future. Luckily we still have John Williams. I hope he will be still live and work some more years. But its good to known that Giacchino and perhaps Alexandre Desplat too (desplat will be celebrated in Vienna on October 14th) are able to do orchestral greatness in the next 10 to 20 years.
    Greetings from Koblenz in germany

    Oh yes,
Stealing the Enterprise is a fantastic cue. 3 or 4 years ago was in Colgne / Köln in germany an evening in the Philharmonie with James Horners music. A big orchestra performed live to this legendary sequence. Star Trek 3 from my beloved James Horner was one of my first 10 soundtracks and is still one of my best. We can be happy today, because thanks to Varese, LaLaLand and Intrada each score was or is availble in its complete form.
Your show to the 50th anniversary is great. The intro with Leonard Nimoy is great too. From when and what source is it?
    Greetings
    André
