FILMIC WITH LEY BRICKNELL – EPISODE 1

Welcome to the premiere episode of FILMIC WITH LEY BRICKNELL on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO.

Note from Erik Woods: I have been a fan of Ley’s show for years.  I first discovered her eclectic program when it was on the RadioNowhere network where it debuted back in 2009.  Her month show brought me much joy and I discovered a lot of music I had never heard before AND I even stole a few ideas from her show for myself.  For instance, when I was on WROCK Radio I presented a segment called the “John Williams Score of the Week.”  Well, that was completely ripped off from Ley’s monthly John Barry segment on her show.

Sadly in 2017, RadioNowhere shut down and FILMIC didn’t have a home. Fortunately, Ley began broadcasting her shows on Mixcloud.

Back in the fall of 2019, I was losing Brandon Shea-Mutala’s excellent BREAKING THE WAVES program and I immediately put out the call to Ley to see if she was interested in joining CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO to fill the spot. Ley was struggling to find an audience on Mixcloud so I thought her jumping over to CSR was the best way for her to find that audience.

I’ve even had the pleasure meet Ley face to face back in the summer of 2016 when she vacationing in Ontario.  We went out for a wonderful lunch at a local brewing here in Kitchener-Waterloo. We would have talked forever if we were allowed to, unfortunately, we could only spend an hour chatting about… well… film music of course.  Ley is a charming, sweet. funny, friendly, warm human being and I hope I have the honour of meeting her again sometime soon.

So, please give a warm CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO welcome to Ley Bricknell and her brilliant show FILMIC.  Say hi to Ley in the comments below or send her an email to let her know how much you love her show.  I’m sure she would appreciate it!

On FILMIC’s premiere episode here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which is actually FILMIC’s 71st broadcast, Ley presents some late 2019 releases, new releases, a classic vintage soundtrack from 1947 and a tribute to Kirk Douglas. Composers include John Powell, Ennio Morricone, Brain Easedale and Theodore Shapiro with music from such films as CALL OF THE WILD, MY NAME IS NOBODY, BLACK NARCISSUS, SPIES IN DISGUISE and much, much more.

Enjoy!

A miss-spent youth can be applied to Filmic presenter Ley Bricknell, she missed the Rolling Stones, a lot of classic TV and the phenomena that was Discotheque due to inhaling movies as often as she could. Black & White, Technicolour, world and indie – she watched them all. It became the scores which made the most impression. Whilst friends were boogying on down to the latest chart hits, Ley would spend endless hours listening to the John Barry scores for the 007 films and other movie music. Hard earned cash soon disappeared on soundtracks, be it vinyl or CD (and now downloads) and what started as an interest has grown into a passion with a collection which seriously needs to be put in alphabetical order!

Ley has been involved in radio production and broadcasting for over 25 years.

Filmic has been on the air for 10 years playing new and vintage scores and together with it’s ‘weird and wonderful’ segments – you never quite know what you’re going to get!

Popcorn compulsory.
