Also, neat to see the original LP album cover. “Star Wars” was a very special album to me. After I saw the movie (yep, in its original release), I wanted my folks to buy me the Meco disco single of the main theme (I don’t recall why; I think some of my friends must have had it). Seizing a “teachable moment,” they bought me the 2-LP actual Williams score instead, and I am forever glad they did.
I also remember taking that LP into elementary school music class, and the music teacher helping us pick out the trumpet, the flute, etc. as we listened to the LSO. So much fun.
The liner notes are also where I learned the word “segue” (kind of – I got the gist of its meaning, but thought it was pronounced “seeg”!)
(I fear I may have shared these stories before… forgive if so…)
I approve of your use of re-recordings in shows like this, by the way. As I know I’ve said, I tend to avoid them otherwise; so it does keep revisits of familiar scores interesting.
Now, let me just plant a bug in your ear (so to speak), and point out that June 4 is the 30th anniversary of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN….!
Finally got to hear the rest of the show! I love that arrangement of the Flag Parade – and it was a disc I could buy after hearing it on your show that didn’t actually break the bank for once. 🙂
Not so keen on the McNeely tracks from SHADOWS… I am especially perplexed since it was, apparently, the score to a book? I am not sure how that works, given that music proceeds at a determined speed, but individuals’ reading does not… Oh, well. I did very much enjoy the FORCE UNLEASHED and OLD REPUBLIC scores you played, though. Very nice stuff! (And why is FORCE not getting a commercial release?!)
(I’d like to hear Bear McCreary score a STAR WARS game, come to think of it… wouldn’t you?)
I don’t know if you watch CLONE WARS, but, in case not, Kiner has done a lot more impressive work there than what is available on the movie’s soundtrack album (I realize, of course, that’s all you have to go on – none of the rest has, to my knowledge, been commercially released yet). He’s crafted some cool themes of his own, and has also done some intriguing things weaving in Williams’ original themes and motives as appropriate (like Griskey does in the FORCE UNLEASHED tracks you played). The first season’s first regular episode, “Ambush,” is a particular stand-out in this regard. (I haven’t seen the show in a while as my 10-year-old decided last season it was getting too violent for us to watch – shamed by my own son’s sense of decency and moral order! – but one day I will catch up on it all.)
Awesome, sir. Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughtful post here. No need to ask for forgiveness. Speak your mind… and I’m glad you do!

PS – Wrath of Khan anniversary noted… however, I’m not sure I’ll get around to it. 🙁 However, I do have a Trek show planned.
